`` Invisible Cities `` By Italo Calvino - 1834 Words

This illusory book entitled â€Å"invisible cities† was published in Italy in 1972, written by a very famous Italian prose writer of the postwar era, Italo Calvino. This book highlights a historical memoir of a well-known Venetian explorer named Marco Polo but focuses around a specific dialogue and a series of stories shared between Kublai Khan, emperor of Mongolia, and his right-hand man Polo in the late 1200’s. This concept of writing emphasizes the aspects of humanity and social consequences in generic city makeup and the way we become trapped in the metaphorical â€Å"inferno of living†. Introduction. Sleep Deprivation Is A Condition That Many

Introduction Sleep deprivation is a condition that many individuals have faced at some point in their life. The National Institute of Health categorizes sleep complications into two conditions known as sleep deprivation and sleep deficiency. According to the National Institute of Health an individual is experiencing sleep deprivation or deficiency if they haven t received the adequate amount of sleep or if they do not sleep well (National Institute of Health, 2007). An adult should receive approximately 7-8 hours of sleep per night in order to get a full night’s rest. About 70.6 percent of college students worldwide report obtaining less than eight hours of sleep, therefore they are considered sleep deprived (Hershner and Chervin,†¦show more content†¦Homeostatic process S is when the body is reliant on the accumulation of sleep-inducing (hypnogenic) substance in the brain, so while the need for sleep increases the wakefulness also continues (Goel, 2017). Circadian process C is wh en the body suggests control of an â€Å"endogenous circadian pacemaker,† which is the body’s internal process and alertness levels. Both processes impact the wake/sleep cycle. When a person gets about seven to eight hours of sleep you hit a stage of sleep called REM sleep, which is the last stage of sleep (Nevid, 2013, p. 173). â€Å"REM sleep normally occurs every 90-120 minutes approximately 4-5 times in a typical night, with each REM sleep period growing progressively longer, with the last episode near rise time† (Hershner, 2014). When an individual lacks a full night of sleep they may become a little â€Å"groggy† the next day, but will still be able to push through the day. A Blazin Summer Day Essay Robyn FletcherA Blazin Summer DayAudience: Anyone trying to cook and do something else at the same time. The warm, sunny July day started out just like any other day during the summer of 91. My mother and father had left for work and left my two brothers Donnie 19 and Andre 18 to baby-sit me. We woke up around 9:30 AM, and got dressed to go to the store to pick up the items for lunch. We returned home at 11:15 A. M. I ran off to my room to catch the last 45 min of The Young and the Restless. Donnie went to the kitchen to begin preparation for lunch. At 11:30 while in the kitchen preparing the hamburger meat, and heating the grease for the tarter tots, Andre asked him to cut his hair. Donnie said, sure go get the stuff ready. While the grease was heating Donnie and Andre went into the bathroom to cut hair. By 11:45 they were done cutting each others hair and Donnie walked into the kitchen, while Andre cleaned up the bathroom. As soon as Donnie placed a handful of tarter tots into the grease it bubbled up and over the pot and on to the stove. Once on the stove the grease and fire contacte d each other, it ignited the stove on fire. From the stove it spread over the linoleum counter top and crawled up the wall above the stove. The fire spread across the ceiling and over to the opposing wall, burning the curtains on the window. It stopped and reversed directions to the adjoining wall on the left. It burnt a small enough hole to go between the wall and the foundation to burn the wires to the dishwasher. While this was happening Donnie had picked up the pot, still on fire, with pot holders, and tried to throw it out the back door, but failed because the gate was locked. Next he tried to make it to the front door about 100 feet from the back door, but didn’t make it because the pot holders caught on fire and were burning his hands. He dropped the pot, still on fire next to yellow and brown chair in the living room. He then proceed to run out side to get the water house and bring it into the house to put on the pot, but that just made things worse. Andre, hearing al l the noise ran out of the bathroom to see what was going on. He yelled for me to get out of the house, and runs into the kitchen. I didn’t really know what was going on, I too had heard the noise but didn’t pay attention because it was my brother. When Andre yelled for me to leave the house I knew something was wrong. There was nothing that I could do but stand at the door and watch what was going on. While Donnie made several attempt to put the fire out I was laughing to myself, because he was doing weird and stupid things. I wasn’t thinking about calling for help or that someone might seriously be hurt, all I wanted to know was what was happening. The walls, curtains, and dishwasher were still on fire. He, Andre, grabbed the baking soda and ran into the living room to put out the pot. Meanwhile Donnie took the hose to the kitchen and tried to put the walls out, but that didn’t work. Andre pulled Donnie back and started throwing Baking soda on the walls and the counter until the fire was out. With the fire out, we still had an extremely hot pot on the floor burning a hole in it. Donnie picked up the pot, and took it outside burning his hand even worse. The only other damage the pot did was scorch the chair. The walls in the kitchen were pitch black and we had no electricity in the front half the house or the basement. Donnie called his girlfriend at work to come and help us clean up the mess. He then called his best-friend to takes him to the doctor to treat his hand. The only damage to the whole house was the kitchen and no power in the front half of the house. We are lucky because sitting right next to the stove was a can of Pam, and it didn’t exploded like it could make the situation worse. We tried to clean the house up as much as we could, but after everything was done and said we were all laughing. The rest of the summer was spent at what used to be called the Ramada Inn on 87th and 435, while they repainted the whole house and remodeled the kitchen. We were all worried that our parents would be upset, but they surprised us and were happy that no one was seriously hurt. To this day we make jokes about that day and my parents tell my brother A watched pot never boils. I had heard my mother say that time and time before, but I never knew what it meant until that day. Now looking back on that day I realize that I should be thankful that no one was hurt and that the fire didn’t burn the whole house down. These words add to the thrust and movement of his description. Directly it begun to rainrained like all furynever see the wind blow so (43). and the rain would thrash along by so thick.blast of wind.. (43+44). These descriptions keep the description moving and keeps the interest of the reader. They invoke common experiences that everyone has experienced. After reading these action words, the reader begins to develop a image of what it was like to be Huck at that point. This image is further aided by other factors. That one sentence encompasses all of the techniques and provides an excellent description. It uses personification, alliteration, allusions, personification, and others. Huck uses several onomatopoeias in his description of the storm. In addition to painting a picture in the readers mind, because of his use of onomatopoeias, the reader can also experience and hear the scene and the storm as if he/she were actually there. Huck uses four words to describe how thunder sounded. The first is fst, when it was just about the bluest and blackest fst! It was as bright as glory (44). The other three are: rumbling, grumbling, and tumbling. and now youd hear the thunder let go with an awful crash, and then go rumbling, grumbling, tumbling, down the sky towards the under side of the world (44). Huck then uses one simile in paricular to further exemplify the sound of the thunder and to create a better scene for the reader. tumbling, down the sky towards the under side of the world, like rolling empty barrels down-stairs — where its long stairs and they bounce a good deal, you know (44). This simile enhances this description of the storm in a few ways. The last part, you know (44) adds more character to the description. It is beginning to sound more like a child, Huck. Ulterior and Alterior Ulterior and Alterior Ulterior and Alterior By Maeve Maddox A reader brought alterior to my attention by asking if a use of â€Å"ulterior motive† he read in an article should have been â€Å"alterior motive.† Although I found several speculative â€Å"definitions† of alterior on various sites, neither the OED nor Merriam-Webster offers an entry for this word. Because it seems always to occur with motive or motives, I conclude that alterior is an error for ulterior. The adjective ulterior derives from Latin ulterior: â€Å"further, more distant.† An ulterior motive is one that lies beyond the apparent motive. For example, when a popular product develops a feature that makes the product more convenient, the apparent motive is to make the product easier for the customer to use. The ulterior motive is to earn more money by selling more merchandise. The mistaken use of alterior is especially common on sites related to emotional involvements, television, sports, and political opinion. Here are some examples, with corrections: INCORRECT: Im not convinced hes doing anything out of the kindness of his heart for women or anyone. Basketball Coaching

Coaches have to love the game. The team reflects the coach, if he’s successful so will you be. The coach needs to be disciplined and teach the fundamentals of the game. They should instill moral values into the team. Basic basketball will make the team better. Basic basketball includes ball handling, proper form, offense, and etc. It may seem boring and stupid but it really makes you a better team and player. Players want a coach who will teach them the game. If the coach is a stickler for defense, your team can beat anyone. The fundamentals of defense can make a good team great and lower tier teams competitive. The defense will lead to offense and things will come easier for your team. Once you’ve mastered the basics the goals that have been set for the team will seem reachable and easier. The confidence of the team will sky rocket and results will follow. â€Å"I teach the kids every aspect of the game and the basics that will make them successful,† said Coach Mike. Your coach needs to be dedicated and love the game. â€Å"I’m a gym rat, I’ll do anything to get into the gym and help the girls,† continued Coach Mike. You need to make touch decisions and sacrifices to be successful. Nothing comes easily especially in this profession. You have to outwork your opposition and be prepared. Being in the gym and loving the game gives you many advantages over other coaches. Being around the game teaches you more and makes you aware of every situation. Yelling isn’t the only way to motivate players. There are many other ways to do so. Sometimes yelling may do more harm than good and hurt the teams psyche. Players will start to resent the coach and start to distance themselves. Once the morale and confidence is broken down the team will start to suffer the consequences. There are certain times when yelling is appropriate but it shouldn’t be used all the time and coaches should never single players out in front of the entire team. The coach should yell for a purpose, but also bring your confidence up at the same time and encourage you to do better. There shouldn’t be false hope put into player’s heads because of the coach’s ego. Players would start to lose respect for him. They really listen to what the coaches have to tell them and take it to heart. It really means a lot to them what you tell them. One of the reasons John Wooden was successful as a basketball coach was because he was the best teacher at the sport and taught his players life skills. He didn’t win ten national championships because he had talent. He won because he taught fundamentals and basic basketball. He instilled in his players that fundamentals is the key to success. To this day his players still use what he taught them and take that with them as they move on with their lives. He was a coach and a father to the players. He always compared how life was like basketball and the players understood what he meant. John Wooden made the Pyramid of Success. The Pyramid of Success consists of twenty-five behaviors that Wooden felt you needed to be successful in not only basketball, but also in life. The top two behaviors are faith and patience. He followed those behaviors and taught his players those behaviors until his dying days. Phil Jackson is also another great coach. He is unique just like John Wooden. They never felt the need to yell. Jackson is the Zen Master and isn’t a yeller. He’s unique because unlike most coaches he trusts his team and lets them play instead of calling timeouts when his team gets into ruts. Most coaches would be infuriated and quickly call a timeout but not him. He sits back and lets them play through difficult periods. He doesn’t coach every player the same and understands the needs of what each player needs to succeed. Jackson knows his players and all their strengths and weaknesses. Another wonderful thing is he taught the two best players the game has ever had to offer: Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, that playing within the concept of the team is the only way to win. An excellent leader leads to an excellent coach. With the confidence and swagger that they have to offer it rubs off on the team. The team needs someone to follow and look up to. Players have to respect the coach. Respect is a major aspect of the game. The team should want to live and die by the coach. Conducting a great practice is a great aspect of any coach. Practice should be conducted with the needs of the team and show progress throughout the year. It is a way for coaches to see what you can bring to the team. Practice makes perfect and for every coach they live and die by that saying. All in all the coach is the catalyst to the team. They are everything to the team and the team thrives off their energy. The personality of the team reflects the coach. Coaches that drill the basics and fundamentals into the team are very successful.
